<p>You know, it&#8217;s almost cliche now. Everyone is overwhelmed and feeling isolated or burned out or all those different words that we ascribe to that. Well you know what? Leaders are feeling overwhelmed and burned out and stressed and a lot of people don&#8217;t recognize how difficult it has been to lead in the last couple of years. So I just want to say that it&#8217;s been hard and it&#8217;s okay to take a step back and give yourself some space and tell yourself that it&#8217;s okay if you don&#8217;t have it all together and you&#8217;re not even sure what to do next.</p>

<p>You know, there&#8217;s been some pretty high expectations on people and teams lately. Just do a little analysis of your team. I was talking to a leader last week and her team has been working so hard with a lot of change and a lot of disruption that she recognized that it was time for a short period of time to kind of take a step back, put more realistic expectations on the team and let them breathe a little bit as they figure out what to do in the future. If that&#8217;s your team, I just want to say that&#8217;s okay to give your team some space to breathe. So think about what it&#8217;s been like for your team lately if that might be something that you need to do for your team.</p>

<p>You know this Sunday is the Super Bowl between the Rams and the Bengals. What is your Super Bowl? A lot of leadership teams and organizations are stuck because they don&#8217;t have an ambition. I watched a documentary not too long ago on the Apollo program. Or there&#8217;s some organizations that are trying to eradicate disease or trying to disrupt industries. You know whatever it is it doesn&#8217;t have to be that big. But what&#8217;s the ambition of your leadership team? What is it trying to achieve ultimately? Without that it&#8217;s easy to get stuck in the mud and it&#8217;s hard to get unstuck and move forward without having that guiding compass.</p>

<p>Do you feel like you&#8217;re wasting time on pointless interactions especially in your meetings? And maybe you&#8217;re thinking about changing your meeting structure. Well then this is for you. Just a little tip for your weekly or bi-weekly tactical meetings. And by the way, this is coming out of Patrick Lencioni&#8217;s framework. Don&#8217;t put other stuff in that meeting. If there&#8217;s a strategic issue to be resolved and discussed, have a strategic meeting and give it the time due. Your tactical meeting should be focused on your course of action. What&#8217;s most important right now? What are the objectives that you have? What do we need to keep track of? And that&#8217;s it. Don&#8217;t fill it with a bunch of other things which creates pointless interactions and focusing on things that really aren&#8217;t that important right now.</p>

<p> You know, I was thinking if you&#8217;re having trouble getting your team or members of your team committed<br />to a course of action, I wrote down a few reasons of why that can be and maybe one of these will resonate. Perhaps it&#8217;s because they don&#8217;t have clarity on what the course of action is. Perhaps you haven&#8217;t asked them to commit. Perhaps they feel like they haven&#8217;t been heard. In other words, you haven&#8217;t gotten all the ideas from everybody out on the table, because it&#8217;s easier for me as a team member to commit if that&#8217;s been done. Or perhaps you&#8217;re not holding people accountable as a leader to being committed and other people see<br />that and so they&#8217;re not going to be committed or they&#8217;re certainly not going to hold each other accountable. Or perhaps they&#8217;re being rewarded for a different course of action. They&#8217;re not being rewarded so for being committed to the team they&#8217;re being rewarded to fulfilling something in their job and obviously they&#8217;re going to pursue that. Perhaps it&#8217;s one of those reasons I can help you diagnose why isn&#8217;t my team committed.</p>

<p> I was thinking about commitment and some of the struggles that some teams have for getting commitment by all of the members of the team. And think about it this way. What type of commitment are you missing? Perhaps there&#8217;s two types of commitment. One is commitment to a course of action: where we&#8217;re going as a team. That&#8217;s one issue. The other is commitment to just pulling my weight. Being a team player. That&#8217;s a different type of commitment that perhaps is more of having a difficult conversation or setting up expectations. So perhaps if you&#8217;re struggling with getting commitment on the team, the first step may be identifying which type of commitment that we&#8217;re talking about.</p>

<p> You know, I was leafing through the book <em>The New Leadership Literacies</em> again and I was reminded of<br />something really important and that is clarity over certainty. So many leadership teams and organizations are stuck right now, because they&#8217;re waiting for certainty. What is the world going to look like? What&#8217;s next? How should we move forward? What your team and organization needs is clarity. This is what we&#8217;re going to focus on now. This is what we&#8217;re going to rally around. This is what&#8217;s most important. Clarity over certainty is a way to get unstuck.</p>

<p>In order to re-energize your team, it needs to be going someplace. As I&#8217;m sitting here at the beginning of February 2022 the Rams and the Bengals are going to the Super Bowl. They have a clear ambition that they&#8217;re trying to achieve. What is your team ultimately trying to achieve? Or is it just treading water doing the same normal work that it does every day? Have a conversation about that with your team as part of the process to re-energize so everyone is going someplace and trying to achieve the same collective vision and purpose.</p>

<p>You know, I recorded a video about the importance of having a difficult conversation to be sure that you have team players on the team and that begs the question, how do you have a difficult conversation? So I just wanted to share what I&#8217;ve learned which is if you need to have a difficult conversation the way to do that is to right now go and have the difficult conversation and just get it out on the table. It really isn&#8217;t that complicated. The hard part is just to go and do it.</p>

<p>You know, sometimes we don&#8217;t have team players on the team and that&#8217;s where we need to start. We need team players on the team. Michael Brody-Waite says that most leaders are sitting on a difficult conversation around a person, around a behavior or around a situation. Is there a difficult conversation that you&#8217;ve been putting off that is keeping your team from being re-energized and having team players on the team?                    I encourage you not to put that off any longer.</p>
