<p>You know this Sunday is the Super Bowl between the Rams and the Bengals. What is your Super Bowl? A lot of leadership teams and organizations are stuck because they don&#8217;t have an ambition. I watched a documentary not too long ago on the Apollo program. Or there&#8217;s some organizations that are trying to eradicate disease or trying to disrupt industries. You know whatever it is it doesn&#8217;t have to be that big. But what&#8217;s the ambition of your leadership team? What is it trying to achieve ultimately? Without that it&#8217;s easy to get stuck in the mud and it&#8217;s hard to get unstuck and move forward without having that guiding compass.</p>

<p> You know, I was thinking if you&#8217;re having trouble getting your team or members of your team committed<br />to a course of action, I wrote down a few reasons of why that can be and maybe one of these will resonate. Perhaps it&#8217;s because they don&#8217;t have clarity on what the course of action is. Perhaps you haven&#8217;t asked them to commit. Perhaps they feel like they haven&#8217;t been heard. In other words, you haven&#8217;t gotten all the ideas from everybody out on the table, because it&#8217;s easier for me as a team member to commit if that&#8217;s been done. Or perhaps you&#8217;re not holding people accountable as a leader to being committed and other people see<br />that and so they&#8217;re not going to be committed or they&#8217;re certainly not going to hold each other accountable. Or perhaps they&#8217;re being rewarded for a different course of action. They&#8217;re not being rewarded so for being committed to the team they&#8217;re being rewarded to fulfilling something in their job and obviously they&#8217;re going to pursue that. Perhaps it&#8217;s one of those reasons I can help you diagnose why isn&#8217;t my team committed.</p>

<p> I was thinking about commitment and some of the struggles that some teams have for getting commitment by all of the members of the team. And think about it this way. What type of commitment are you missing? Perhaps there&#8217;s two types of commitment. One is commitment to a course of action: where we&#8217;re going as a team. That&#8217;s one issue. The other is commitment to just pulling my weight. Being a team player. That&#8217;s a different type of commitment that perhaps is more of having a difficult conversation or setting up expectations. So perhaps if you&#8217;re struggling with getting commitment on the team, the first step may be identifying which type of commitment that we&#8217;re talking about.</p>

So many leadership teams and organizations are stuck right now, because they&#8217;re waiting for certainty. What is the world going to look like? What&#8217;s next? How should we move forward? What your team and organization needs is clarity. This is what we&#8217;re going to focus on now. This is what we&#8217;re going to rally around. This is what&#8217;s most important. Clarity over certainty is a way to get unstuck.</p>

<p>If you want to infuse health on your leadership team, build a cohesive team, create clarity, eliminate politics, improve morale, it starts with your motive. Are you leading from a rewards-based motive where you look at leadership as a reward or are you leading in and from a responsibility-based motive and you see leadership as a responsibility. This is from the book <em>The Motive</em> by Patrick Lencioni. We use it in our practice when working with leaders and leadership teams. I encourage you to read it and look at your own motive because that is the starting point to infusing health into your team and organization.</p>
